2nd Blizzard Of 2010: Day 3
February 11, 2010, 3:01 am

The second Blizzard of 2010 dumped 6 to 10 inches of snow across the Detroit Area from Tuesday, February 9th to Wednesday, February 10th. A beautiful, frozen blanket remained on top of Motown on Thursday, and I shot another video of the city skyline. Look at this and compare to my video from two days ago.

2nd Blizzard Of 2010: Day 2
February 10, 2010, 1:00 am

Blizzard #2 of 2010 pelted Detroit and Southeast Michigan with moderate to heavy snowfall early Wednesday morning.  I loved being on snow patrol during Local 4 News Morning, which began 30 minutes earlier than normal for viewers.  I did tag team weather with my co-worker Eric Braate.

Many of my weather buddies on Facebook answered my call with snowfall amounts.  By air-time, several Detroiters had 5 inches of new snow or more.  Also, I received reports from Facebook friends from coast to coast.  My Co-Anchor inquired about the weather in Southern California on the air, and I was able to answer him with an observation from my Digital Weather Watcher Jovanny Venegas, which was:  ”Orange County, CA no snow just rain.”  Similarly, Max Cacas reported “5 new inches on top of what’s already fallen…in (Washington,)D.C.”  Many of my audience members were able to catch these reports on the livestream of my newscast.

It was a wild morning!  Just what a meteorologist and science reporter, like me, lives for!

By noon, many communities had up to 10 inches of snow.  Here are the final snowfall totals from The National Weather Service:

This is the map of the total snowfall amounts from the February 9-10, 2010 snowstorm.

2nd Blizzard Of 2010: Day 1

The second 2010 Blizzard is now taking shape and bringing snow to Detroit!  This was the second blizzard for the Mid-Atlantic.  What was a blizzard for them was a moderate and, at times, heavy snowstorm for the Motor City and Southeast Michigan.

1st Blizzard Of 2010

The first 2010 Blizzard was massive!  However, Detroit and Southeast Michigan had just cold and blustery conditions during the February 5th-6th weekend.  It was a totally different story for The Ohio Valley, Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic.

In Washington, DC, where I covered the Blizzard of ’96, two to three feet of snow was common. Dulles Airport had over thirty-two inches!

Many Michiganders are concerned because we have several relatives and loved ones in the blizzard’s path.  My Weather Watchers emailed WDIV with their photos of the snow and snow damage, and I showed them on Saturday’s Local 4 News at 6 and 11.  Here they are:

2010 Blizzard: Hangar's roof falls onto jets' tails. Photo sent by Kevin.

2010 Blizzard: Caved in roof tilting three jets upward. Photo sent by Kevin.

2010 Blizzard: Cars and yards covered by heavy snow in Silver Spring, Maryland. Photo sent by Carla.

2010 Blizzard: Snow piles onto the patio, chairs and table south of Philadelphia.

Can you believe more is on the way?  Another winter storm will form in a few days, and Detroit will not miss out on it.

Snow, Cold, Sunshine and Cub Scouts

Andrew Humphrey, CBMSaturday, February 28, 2009:

This morning I drove to work through snow.  Fortunately, it was very manageable and actually beautiful.  I felt like I was in a snow globe.  We had one of those rare occurrences; lake effect snow from the east rather than the west.  Northeasterly winds picked up moisture from Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair and dropped it as a thin line of lake effect snow.  When I got into work and cranked up 4 Live Radar and saw the formation and movement of the snow on the radar loop.  I enjoyed sharing what I experienced with the audience so they could start their weekend off on the right foot.

During Local 4 News Morning, which began at 6am, my coworker Lauren Sanders told the story about a family who were taken to the hospital with possible carbon monoxide poisoning.  Amazingly, the family’s two year-old alerted the mother and saved the entire family.  Local4 Reporter Natalie Sentz interviewed the mother.  This extraordinary story should be a reminder for all of us to make sure our home appliances and heating and cooling systems are properly maintained and in working order and to invest in carbon monoxide detectors.

I hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine while staying warm.  After days of clouds inclement weather, we were finally treated to a sunny day!

Just before Local 4 News at 6, Cub Scout Pack 863 from Plymouth, Michigan arrived for a station tour.  I showed the boys and their parents all of WDIV-TV’s inner workings and fielded some terrific weather and television questions.  My fellow writers, producers and anchors like Karen Drew and Katrina Hancock shared their experiences with the scouts and found them adorable.  The visit will help the scouts earn a new badge!

Snow Showers Decrease, Accidents Increase
February 23, 2009, 2:48 am

Andrew Humphrey, CBMSunday, February 22, 2009:

Fortunately the snow showers are winding down, but unfortunately we had several accidents.  While snow showers diminished during the morning, my colleague Gail Anderson seemed to report on a new traffic accident every hour.  Also, my colleague Hank Winchester reported the heartbreaking story of teenager involved in a snowmobile accident.

Literal rays of sunshine were amidst those somber moments.  The weather was bright through the lunch hour.  Then, as I predicted, Michigan’s legendary lake effect snow machine began cranking and spreading scattered snow showers across the motor city region.  An additional half-inch to an inch of new snow brought our weekend totals between 3 and 5 inches.

On Local4 News at 6, my fellow anchor Steve Garagiola read a story about a terrible car crash in Southwest Detroit.  My heart goes out to everyone adversely affected by this weekend’s snow.  Their stories are difficult to talk about, but they are necessary so families can be alerted to use caution if they decide to navigate through winter’s hazards.

Fortunately, I have sunshine in the forecast this week!  Detroiters have the extraordinary opportunity to make history by voting in Tuesday’s mayoral special primary election.  The morning may be frigid, but I have mostly sunny skies all day for all voters.  Morning lows will be near 10 degrees, but afternoon highs will be around 31; closer to normal.  Take my advice – just dress with a few extra layers so you can feel warm & comfortable while feeling proud participating in choosing a new leader and future for the great City of Detroit.

More Snow Is Here!

Andrew Humphrey, CBMSaturday, February 21, 2009:

Days like this feel fantastic!  I love math, science, weather and keeping people and families safe.  Being a Local4 Meteorologist combines all of these things.  The weekends are never dull and are always exciting!

Saturday looked spectacular when I began the day on Local4 News Morning.  We had sunshine in the Motor City.  However, looks can be deceiving.  Our newest Alberta Clipper was pounding Chicago and Southwest Michigan and was taking dead aim on Detroit and Southeast Michigan.  I announced the winter storm warning to help the audience brace for the snowy onslaught.

Snow started falling at 9am and intensified after lunchtime.  Road and sidewalk conditions were hazardous.  I kept viewers updated on Local4 all afternoon.  By the time my live weathercast was on Local4 News at 6, three to four inches of fresh snow was common.

The main wave of snow has moved through, but scattered snow showers and blowing snow will keep the streets slippery and add about another inch to our weekend snow totals.

Andrew Humphrey, CBMFriday, February 20, 2009:

I am happy to compose the very first blog on JustWeather.com!

Snow is on the way! I came in on my day off to prepare because I was so excited! I created the maps and movies I would need for my weekend shows on Local4.

Can’t wait to inform the public about our next snow storm. Look forward to helping Detroit and Southeast Michigan get through it with my Local4 teammates.
